KCF relies on volunteers to help keep the fridge and area safe, clean, and organized. If you have 15-20 minutes available in your week, please signup to help tidy the fridge here (signup.com/go/OCOABxb). Anything helps, especially on days that are not currently filled!
The community fridge is 100% volunteer operated, by community for community. All are encouraged to participate and share their ideas for the community fridge and food sovereignty so long as it respects those that the fridge seeks to empower. We are committed to providing a joyful, safe and welcoming environment regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, ability, ethnicity, socioeconomic status and religion (or lack thereof). Policing the fridge, passing judgment, or monitoring fridge usage and users will not be tolerated. The community fridge volunteers recognize and operate within the following principles.
Formally volunteering or donating is not necessary in order to participate, but is helpful to get general understanding of the supply and cleanliness of the fridge!
If you wish to regularly volunteer, including helping with scheduled clean-ups and/or stocking of the fridge, please complete the volunteer intake form ✶ If you wish to donate or have donated, please complete the contribution form ✶ Please also see donation guidelines here!
If you wish to get involved with back-end organizing please reach out! All skill sets are encouraged, including but not limited to:
✶ Meeting facilitation
✶ Finance management
✶ Outreach
✶ Art
✶ Cooking
✶ Event planning
Since the fridge is community-operated and based in mutual aid, it’s organization is non-hierarchical. This means that decisions are made together with community input where no single person can make the final call. Roles in back-end organizing are still essential and include volunteer coordination, meeting facilitation, finance management, and outreach.
Other ways to get involved include:
✶ Share with friends & family
✶ Tidy the space when you can (cleaning supplies currently stored in Burke Hair Salon during open hours)
✶ Bring an item to donate to the fridge when you’re heading downtown
✶ Join an open meeting
✶ Organize a food drive
✶ Take note of community member suggestions from the suggestion sheet or shared in-person while at the fridge — if there are gaps or requested items, share amongst your network!
✶ Create your own mutual aid networks, food justice or otherwise
The community fridge is not the only way to confront food sovereignty or supporting the community through mutual aid. There is no one way to support your community, but we can start by listening to the needs of those most affected by colonial capitalism.
